Today we reflect on the wonderful adventure we shared with the Moran Family. The family members traveled to River Bend Sportsmans Resort, Inman SC, from Colorado, New Jersey and New York to spend a few days taking Sporting Clays and Wingshooting lessons with Daniel Schindler, Founder of Paragon School of Sporting. During the family's 3-day stay, it was hard to tell who had more fun. Grandfather, John Moran, took his shooting to a whole new level. Patrick and his 2 sons, Tate and Japes enjoyed moving their shooting forward and learning to break the various target presentations. There was a lot of trash talk and camaraderie. Johnny, the city boy, came alive and ...
If there’s a common denominator in the phone calls we receive regarding instruction, it’s about the same word…consistency. As in, “Why am I not consistent?” The gentleman in Alaska was on the phone asking that question. His being a AA shooter, I could hear his frustration. He knew, correctly, that he was better than his scorecards were showing. After a few minutes of listening, I very politely explained that I knew why he was not consistent. After a bit of silence, he very respectfully said there wasn’t any way I could know that. He went on to say, we’d never met, and to his knowledge, I’d never seen him shoot. AND…he said ...
Greetings and thank you for visiting with us again. Here’s hoping most of your shooting boxes are in the shade. As I converse with each of my students in the clubhouse before we touch the gun, I respectfully ask, “Why are you here?” Now, maybe you are thinking I ought to know that answer, considering this person has come for a lesson. Well, I do know that, but what I don’t yet know exactly is what the word success means to my student today. And that’s very important. My definition of success, and your definition, may not be their definition. From the novice opening the box with their first shotgun…or week-end warrior seeking to ...
Well…maybe not exactly easy…but, here is a down and dirty, common sense hit list of exactly what puts more Xs on a scorecard.FWIW…my understanding of the science behind excellent shooting has come from my respected mentors. But, the art of my successful teaching has come from my thousands of students. Here are 4 cliffs notes on the process of putting more Xs on a scorecard.Step 1, is the word…or the question I hear most often… ”Why am I so inconsistent?” Well, it could be any of a few dozen commonplace reasons, but this we can count on: the swing being observed, on the very same target, typically, is not the same every time. It’s changing. ...
Greetings. Recently there's been some online dialogue about overcomplicating things. In the early chapters of a shooter’s development, it’s understandable to be “adding”…adding methods…changing equipment…etc. This is an exciting time for a new shooter and some reasonable experimenting should be encouraged…maybe a new gun purchase here and there…new chokes…new lenses…new ammunition? In the beginning, fun and entertainment trump complicated. However…as time passes and more and more shot goes down range, eventually, missing gets more and more of our attention. Which leads to some examining. We begin ...
