Today we reflect on the wonderful adventure we shared with the Moran Family. The family members traveled to River Bend Sportsmans Resort, Inman SC, from Colorado, New Jersey and New York to spend a few days taking Sporting Clays and Wingshooting lessons with Daniel Schindler, Founder of Paragon School of Sporting. During the family's 3-day stay, it was hard to tell who had more fun. Grandfather, John Moran, took his shooting to a whole new level. Patrick and his 2 sons, Tate and Japes enjoyed moving their shooting forward and learning to break the various target presentations. There was a lot of trash talk and camaraderie. Johnny, the city boy, came alive and ...
For many of us, Sporting Clays – along with all the other clay target disciplines – is about hitting the target. The “not missing” part – that pretty much applies to all the shooting sports. The problems begin when we miss. Too often, and unfortunately, missing ends up being more than just a problem. A miss becomes a distraction. A distraction that frustrates and usually discourages. All understandable. These emotions can be temporary, or worse, hang around for a while, predictably creating more missing and lowering scores. Years ago, mining my way to becoming an All American, yours truly has been there, done that. More times than I care to ...
"The good news is…when that same swing component is executed correctly…the target will break." All those who DON’T care if they break the target…please raise your hand. The truth is, we all want the target to break. And…without fail…every single time…there’s a very specific, valid reason why it did break…and why it didn’t. It’s long past time for all the mystery around X’s and 0’s to end. Just what is it, exactly, that we have to do to break the target CONSISTENTLY? It’s cold. And making it worse, it’s windy. The rain is more on than off. So the course is empty. ...
As the Sporting Clays season is about to kick off, here are a few thoughts about how to start our new year, in the right direction. No, not my direction…what might be your best direction. Understandably, and rightfully so, a lot of attention is given to our equipment choices, making those choices a high priority. No arguments here, let’s make good choices. Right after that we’ll begin to polish our shooting, our methods and strategies, signing up for events we wish to attend. This is an intelligent, prudent approach. But is this what’s most important, the first question at the top of our to-do list? Those who climb the ladder to more consistency ...
I can’t quite remember the year but the memory is crystal clear. For those of you who might not know the name, it’s Lefty Kreh. He’s a legend and deservedly so, an author, teacher and all around nice guy. Smitten by the lure of fly-fishing, I walked into the Boiling Springs Fly Shop, just outside Carlisle Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania has some incredible trout streams and I was re-stocking my supply of artificial terrestrials, also known as ants, beetles, crickets and such. This Spring morning was busy hosting a fly-casting school. Lo and behold, there sat Mr. Kreh at a table having a sandwich. By reputation and pictures, I knew who he was so I walked up and humbly ...
