Perception Versus Reality

When an entry-level shooter decides to work with me, I can almost always count on his or her open mind and eagerness to listen. That's because from their perspective of "why did that just happen," they have little or no experience to fall back on. X's and 0's are a complete mystery. That's OK of course, and very much understandable. Underway enthusiastically, instruction is received and implemented with little if any resistance. Predictably, student comprehension and progress accelerate rapidly. Here's a common, subtle difference with a more experienced shooter in a lesson. XXXXXX. We're off to a good start, yes? My student's thinking, "Darn right we are! I smoked those targets!" ...

Perception Versus Reality

Trust in the Shooting Box (continued)  Second, assuming 1) we are experiencing some of this success…and 2) we are competing…there will come a time in which our attention should shift from executing the step-by-step swing components to trusting our swing without micromanaging it.  When we were very young and first jumped on a bicycle, it all seemed so complicated…at that time. Not too long after, we didn’t have to think about it all…just jump on and voila, you’re Evel Knieval. This was the same step 1, step 2 process we’re discussing here.  I write you about this 2-step process because yesterday I read an ...

Dealing With A “FLINCH”

Perception Versus Reality

DEALING WITH A “FLINCH”  To be honest, admittedly, this is as much about what I believe as what I know. Some flinching defies explanation. Other flinching does not. A flinch is a frustrating, tormenting affliction, an inability to pull a perfectly good, working trigger that obstinately and persistently refuses to fire. Despite a mighty effort, the paralyzed-finger cannot pull the trigger initiating the flinch, throwing the muzzle wildly off the target, completely spoiling the shot. For the shooter, this is beyond exasperating leading to a host of miserable problems and the desperate search for any relief. This you can take to the bank. Predictably and ...

Do You Have A Specific Strategy For Raising Your Match Scores?

Perception Versus Reality

It's hard not to be impressed with a Big Dawg breaking those long-distance targets no one else can seem to hit. Final score: 97, a worthy accomplishment deserving of congratulations. Here's a look at how that score was built. This month's Tip asks you to look at your scorecard and review the score and the target presentations, individually, Station by Station. I'm willing to bet there's a pearl of information on that scorecard staring back at you, waiting to be discovered. I won't be the one telling you not to practice on those long-distance, more challenging targets. For good reasons, we should. But I am proposing that your best score this weekend won't be built on these ...
