Can you tell which foster kid had their friend die in their arms? In spite of their fear of guns, they voluntarily stood in line, waiting for their turn to break a few clays. And they did, surrounded by cheers and applause! Then walked to the back of the line so they could do it again!! For these kids, and their counselors and social workers, said humbly, this outing made a huge difference…an entirely new way to look upon guns and shooting…a positive, life-changing difference. This was a meaningful difference that not only included building self-confidence but visibly raised self-esteem.

Spend some time with teenage foster kids and make a difference. Help them face their fear of firearms so those fears don't rule them for the rest of their lives. Inviting these folks to a safe shooting environment and breaking clays…one youngster…one shell and one target…will make healing memories that will never be forgotten…ever.

Want to be a hero? Adopt an older child in the foster care system or find a teenage foster kid and invite him or her to your Christmas or New Years Dinner. Most of the older foster kids we’ve spent time with want desperately to have a family of their own. They understand the odds against their being adopted. They tell us the next best thing would be having a holiday dinner with a family, even if it’s only for a meal and a couple of hours and being “included.”

From the Editor . . . Beyond The Target captures the very soul of Dan Schindler’steaching - unvarnished observations, thoughtful training regimens, and a deft, student-centered style that invites learning at every turn. Schindler writes that this is not a book of addition to the musty orthodoxy of Sporting Clays instruction. Instead, this is a story of smart subtraction, slicing through the tried-but-maybe-not-so-true gobbledygook that keeps shooters forever mired in performance plateaus . . .
